The former powder room was outdated and bland. The toilet was too close to the wall to pass code clearance requirements. The room was always cold in the winter.
As part of a kitchen renovation, the powder room was also upgraded. The toilet was moved away from the wall and the builder grade vanity was replaced with a classic white pedestal sink. Lighting was improved with a vintage style sconce above the new medicine cabinet. An exhaust fan was added as well as an in wall electric heater to take the chill off on a cold winter day.
The gorgeous marble floor is an example of our commitment to reusing materials. As is industry standard, when ordering tile we always order 10 - 20% extra to the calculated amount needed. Some of the factors that can affect needing more tile include: cuts resulting in awkward unusable pieces, damaged tile, shipping breakage, human error in cutting, tile pattern creating more waste than planned for or the actual room size increased after demo. The longer the lead time, the more extra tile we want on hand so a job doesn’t grind to a halt if we run short. On occasion none of these situations occur, we don’t need any of the extra tile and we are left with surplus tile. In those cases, we incorporate the tile into a future project when and if appropriate.
In this situation we had 11 pieces of 12x12 mosaic marble leftover from a previous bathroom project and it was also perfect for this powder room. Client #1 kept two pieces for herself “just in case” and sold 9 pieces to Client #2. The 9 pieces worked out beautifully as a centerpiece which we surrounded by grey marble 12x12 pieces cut to the exact size to make the border.
