MODERN CONDO BAKER’S KITCHEN, GLEN RIDGE

2023 ASID NJ Bronze Award For Design Excellence, LARGE KITCHEN

KITCHEN PROBLEM: Although the kitchen space was large enough (just over 200 SF), the cabinets were shoddy, the range and sink were too close together, sink too small, storage was inefficient and poorly organized and the peninsula blocked the kitchen from the living area. The 4-story brick building was a commercial space repurposed into a condo residence. The HVAC and sprinkler system were installed in various dropped soffits resulting in 3 different kitchen ceiling heights: 93”, 101” and 107”. The clients are busy professionals with 3 young adult children. The couple loves to entertain and the family likes to cook together, especially holiday baking.
KITCHEN SOLUTION: The peninsula barrier was replaced with a 4-seat baking station island featuring a pop-up mixer, pull-out peg board for tools, baking supplies roll-out trays. The design aesthetic of this open plan condo is warm modern with straight lines and mostly muted colors to allow the couple’s art collection to shine. From the beginning of design and throughout the project, clients and design team were committed to sustainability: converted from gas range to induction, other appliances are Energy Star, 98% of construction debris was recycled/repurposed, Green Guard certified quartz and low VOC paint for indoor air quality, WaterSense faucet, responsibly harvested walnut with non-toxic tung oil sealer, old appliances and sink (still in working order) were donated.
